Insurance enrollment under contested Affordable Care Act underway

Open enrollment for Americans who purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act is underway. It started on Nov. 1, just days before Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election.

About 21 million Americans get their health care coverage through the bill, which is often referred to as Obamacare. As a result, the number of uninsured Americans is dropping. This year, 100,000 so-called Dreamers are eligible to enroll. The Deferred Action for Children Arrivals program recipients are people brought to the United States illegally when they were young by their parents.

However, the election of Donald Trump has made the future of the Affordable Care Act unknown. Obamacare became a hot topic on the campaign trail. At the debate in September against Kamala Harris, Trump said he had “concepts of a plan” to replace it. But he did not give specifics.

Then later at a campaign appearance, Trump said he intends to keep the Affordable Care Act unless his administration can do something much better. He said that plan would entail coverage that costs less and leads to better health care.

The enhanced subsidies which cut premium payments, passed during the Biden administration, are set to expire in 2025.

Americans have until Dec. 15 to enroll for insurance under the Affordable Care Act and have coverage begin on Jan. 1, 2025. Open enrollment officially ends on Jan. 15, 2025.

CRAIG NIGRELLI: OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR AMERICANS WHO PURCHASE HEALTH INSURANCE THROUGH THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT IS UNDERWAY. IT STARTED ON NOVEMBER 1ST, JUST DAYS BEFORE DONALD TRUMP WON THE ELECTION.
ABOUT 21-MILLION AMERICANS GET THEIR HEALTH CARE COVERAGE THROUGH WHAT IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “OBAMACARE”. AS A RESULT, THE NUMBER OF UNINSURED AMERICANS IS DROPPING. THIS YEAR, 100,000 SO-CALLED DREAMERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL. THE DEFERRED ACTION FOR CHILDHOOD ARRIVALS program recipients ARE PEOPLE, BROUGHT TO THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY WHEN THEY WERE VERY YOUNG BY THEIR PARENTS.
MANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN IN THIS COUNTRY FOR DECADES,
BUT THE ELECTION OF DONALD TRUMP HAS THROWN A WRINKLE INTO THE PICTURE. OBAMACARE BECAME A HOT TOPIC ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL.
AT THE DEBATE IN SEPTEMBER AGAINST KAMALA HARRIS, TRUMP SAID HE HAD “CONCEPTS OF A PLAN” TO REPLACE THE ACA BUT DID NOT GIVE SPECIFICS. THEN LATER, IN A CAMPAIGN APPEARANCE HE SAID THIS.

DONALD TRUMP: I’M GOING TO KEEP THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT UNLESS WE CAN DO SOMETHING MUCH BETTER. WE’LL KEEP IT. IT STINKS. IT’S NOT GOOD. IF WE CAN DO SOMETHING BETTER, WE ARE GOING TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT, MEANING LESS EXPENSIVE AND BETTER HEALTH CARE FOR YOU. LESS EXPENSIVE AND BETTER HEALTH CARE FOR YOU. WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR BETTER FOR THE GOVERNMENT, WE ARE LOOKING FOR BETTER FOR YOU.

CRAIG NIGRELLI: IT ALSO BEARS WORTH WATCHING THE COST OF SUCH INSURANCE. THE ENHANCED SUBSIDIES, PASSED DURING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION, WHICH CUT PREMIUM PAYMENTS IN-HALF FOR POLICY HOLDERS ARE SET TO EXPIRE AT THE END OF 2025. FOR MORE UNBIASED UPDATES DOWNLOAD THE STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP
