THE VINEYARD WIND PROJECT OFF THE COAST OF MASSACHUSETTS PAID THE NEARBY TOWN OF NANTUCKET MILLIONS FOR ITS SUPPORT.
BUT NOW, FOLLOWING A RECENT MALFUNCTION, SOME LOCAL RESIDENTS WANT IT GONE.
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“This is an experiment. And the results are in, it’s time to shut it down.”
[JACK AYLMER]
AFTER A DAMAGED TURBINE BLADE CAUSED DEBRIS FROM THE WIND FARM TO WASH UP ON THE SHORES OF NANTUCKET-
THE TOWN IS STARTING TO RETHINK ITS COLLABORATION WITH VINEYARD WIND.
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“The emergency has also revealed the inadequacy of vineyard winds coordination and communication regard required by the Good Neighbor agreement. Although the town has done its part to honor our obligations, we intend to renegotiate the terms of the agreement in light of this accident.”
[JACK AYLMER]
THE GOOD NEIGHBOR AGREEMENT DEAL BETWEEN NANTUCKET AND VINEYARD WIND INCLUDED STIPULATIONS REQUIRING THE ENERGY COMPANY TO PAY OUT 16 MILLION DOLLARS TO THE TOWN.
IN EXCHANGE, NANTUCKET WAS REQUIRED TO PUBLICLY BACK THEIR OFFSHORE WIND PROJECT.
WHILE THE TOWN’S LEADERSHIP INTENDS TO REVISIT THE TERMS OF THIS DEAL-
SOME RESIDENTS WANT THE WIND FARM SHUT DOWN PERMANENTLY.
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“I’m happy to hear that you’re renegotiating but I really hope that renegotiating doesn’t mean for more money, the only mitigation on this project, the only real mitigation is to have no turbines.”
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“I think you guys need to move forward with your solution to getting out of the Good Neighbor agreement as quickly as possible and abandoning this project.”
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“I would suggest we cancel it. Okay.
I just I just, your question was about renegotiating.
Thank you. I appreciate it. Okay. My thought is just end it.”
[JACK AYLMER]
THIS COMES AS GE, THE COMPANY THAT SUPPLIED THE TURBINE’S BLADES, ATTRIBUTED THE ACCIDENT TO WHAT THEY CALL A MANUFACTURING DEVIATION.
MEANWHILE, VINEYARD WIND’S CLEANUP EFFORTS IN THE AREA REMAIN UNDERWAY, NEARLY TWO WEEKS AFTER THE INITIAL INCIDENT.
WITH THE COMPANY ATTEMPTING TO WIN BACK SOME LOCAL SUPPORT.
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“We have scores of people who are here on this island cleaning things up. We have over a dozen vessels in the water. We’re chasing every lead that we’re getting on any debris in the water and on the shores and we’re committed to cleaning it up.” -Richard Smith, Vineyard Wind representative
[JACK AYLMER]
HOWEVER, MANY NANTUCKET RESIDENTS STILL REMAIN UNCONVINCED.
[NANTUCKET RESIDENT]
“Look at the disastrous effects … This is one big experiment which you all signed happily because we received money.”
