PRESIDENT BIDEN MADE SURE TO ADDRESS ABORTION IN HIS STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH – BUT WITH 8 MONTHS UNTIL THE ELECTION – IS IT STILL A TOP ISSUE FOR VOTERS? LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME NEW POLLING.
ONE-IN-EIGHT VOTERS SAY IT’S A TOP FACTOR INFLUENCING THEIR 2024 VOTE ACCORDING TO A KAISER FAMILY FOUNDATION SURVEY.
THAT SAME POLL FOUND THAT A LARGE PORTION OF REPUBLICAN VOTERS, 43-PERCENT DO SUPPORT ABORTION IN ‘ALL OR MOST CASES.’
WHILE THE ISSUE HAS BEEN PRESENTED AS ONE THAT DIVIDES AMERICANS ALONG PARTY LINES – WE’RE SEEING A DROP COMPARED TO SIMILAR POLLING AFTER THE 2022 MIDTERMS.
BACK THEN OVERALL, 24 PERCENT OF ALL VOTERS SAID ABORTION RIGHTS WERE TOP OF MIND, FUELED BY THAT SUMMER’S SUPREME COURT DECISION TO OVERTURN ROE V. WADE, LEAVING ABORTION LAW UP TO INDIVIDUAL STATES.
IN THE MIDTERMS, DEMOCRATS MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE SENATE, WHILE REPUBLICANS REGAINED CONTROL OF THE HOUSE, ALBEIT WITH A SLIM MAJORITY.
CURRENTLY, TWO-THIRDS OF VOTERS ACROSS PARTY LINES SUPPORT GUARANTEEING A FEDERAL RIGHT TO ABORTION, INCLUDING 43 PERCENT OF REPUBLICANS.
THURSDAY NIGHT DURING THE STATE OF THE UNION, PRESIDENT BIDEN VOWED TO RESTORE ABORTION PROTECTIONS ONCE COVERED BY ROE V. WADE.
[BIDEN]
IF YOU, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, SEND ME A CONGRESS THAT SUPPORTS THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, I PROMISE YOU: I WILL RESTORE ROE V. WADE AS THE LAW OF THE LAND AGAIN.
[KARAH RUCKER]
SINCE ROE V. WADE WAS OVERTURNED, 21 STATES HAVE REPORTEDLY PUT RESTRICTIONS ON ABORTION, WHILE 26 STATES HAVE EXPANDED ABORTION RIGHTS. THREE STATES HAVE ABORTION BANS HELD UP IN COURTS.
LAWMAKERS AND LEGAL EXPERTS ADMIT FUTURE LEGAL CHALLENGES ARE POSSIBLE.
DESPITE DIFFERING VIEWS, KFF FOUND FEW REPUBLICAN VOTERS WHO SUPPORT ABORTION RIGHTS WILLING TO VOTE AGAINST THEIR PARTY.
