THE PANDEMIC MAY BE OVER…
BUT FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS STILL SUFFERING FROM THE LINGERING HEALTH EFFECTS OF COVID–19 INFECTIONS THE FIGHT CONTINUES…
DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE ILHAN OMAR INTRODUCED LEGISLATION FRIDAY DEDICATING 10 BILLION DOLLARS TO FIND A CURE FOR LONG COVID.
THE LONG COVID RESEARCH MOONSHOT ACT ECHOES A SIMILAR BILL INTRODUCED IN THE U-S SENATE BY BERNIE SANDERS.
ACCORDING TO OMAR, LONG COVID CURRENTLY IMPACTS MORE THAN 23 MILLION AMERICANS. IT IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH DEBILITATING FATIGUE AND IT’S BEEN LINKED TO OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
THE BILL WOULD ESTABLISH A RESEARCH PROGRAM WITHIN THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH TO CREATE A LONG-COVID DATABASE AND SPEED UP CLINICAL TRIALS.
IT WOULD ALSO REQUIRE ANY NEW TREATMENTS CREATED THROUGH THE ACT TO BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE.
IT’S NOT THE FIRST ATTEMPT BY MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO GET LONG COVID LEGISLATION PASSED.
IN 2022, THE TREAT LONG COVID ACT FAILED TO MAKE IT OUT OF COMMITTEE.
THE BILL WOULD HAVE PRIORITIZED GRANTS TO CLINICS FOCUSING ON LONG COVID.
