IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA AT THE CORNER WHERE GEORGE FLOYD WAS MURDERED 4.5 YEARS AGO THE BUSINESSES IN THE SQUARE ARE SUING THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS AND MAYOR JACOB FRY FOR $30 MILLION DOLLARS.
FIVE BUSINESSES OWNERS NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF 38TH STREET AND CHICAGO AVENUE ARGUE THE CITY’S ACTIONS OF CLOSING THE INTERSECTION WITH LARGE CONCRETE BARRICADES HURT THEIR REVENUE STREAMS, REAL ESTATE VALUE AND REPUTATION BECAUSE THE BARRIERS BLOCKED OFF PEDESTRIAN ACCESS, ACCORDING TO THE MINNESOTA STAR TRIBUNE.
THE BUSINESS OWNERS ALSO CLAIM CRIME HAS BEEN RUNNING RAMPANT IN THE AREA NOW KNOWN AS ‘GEORGE FLOYD SQUARE’ BECAUSE IT BECAME A ‘NO GO ZONE’ FOR POLICE OFFICERS AFTER FORMER MINNEAPOLIS POLICE OFFICER DEREK CHAUVIN WAS FOUND GUILTY OF MURDERING FLOYD IN MAY OF 2020 JUST OUTSIDE OF CUP FOODS CORNER STORE.
THE OWNERS OF CUP FOODS ARE SOME OF THE PLAINTIFFS LISTED ON THE LAWSUIT.
THE ‘GEORGE FLOYD SQUARE’ BECAME A PUBLIC MEMORIAL “A GATHERING PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO HONOR AND REMEMBER” GEORGE FLOYD AND “PAYS TRIBUTE TO GEORGE FLOYD’S LIFE AND HAS BECOME A POWERFUL SYMBOL FOR CONVEYING THE IMPORTANCE OF BLACK LIVES IN MINNEAPOLIS,” ACCORDING TO THE CITY’S WEBSITE.
THE PLANTIFFS FILED AN EARLIER LAWSUIT IN 2023, SEEKING 1.5 MILLION IN DAMAGES, HOWEVER, THAT LAWSUIT WAS DISMISSED.
MICHAEL HEALEY, THE LAWYER REPRESENTING THE BUSINESS OWNERS, TOLD THE STAR TRIBUNE, THERE ARE TWO POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FOR THE CASE. ONE, HE SAID, IS THAT THE BUSINESS OWNERS COULD REACH A SETTLEMENT AND KEEP THEIR PROPERTY, OR TWO, THE CITY BEGINS EMMINENT DOMAIN PROCEEDINGS PAYS THE OWNERS FOR THEIR PROPERTY.
A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS TOLD THE STAR TRIBUNE IT CANNOT COMMENT ON PENDING LITIGATION BUT THAT IT “UNDERSTANDS THE CHALLENGES THAT RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES HAVE CONFRONTED IN THE WAKE OF GEORGE FLOYD’S MURDER.“
