NEW YORK CITY IS GIVING 4 THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANTS TO MIGRANT FAMILIES STAYING IN CITY SHELTERS IN AN EFFORT TO MOVE THEM INTO PERMANENT HOUSING.
THE CITY IS STRUGGLING WITH SPACE AS 65 THOUSAND MIGRANTS ARE CURRENTLY IN SHELTERS.
THE CITY HAS SPENT MORE THAN 5 BILLION DOLLARS IN THE PAST TWO YEARS ON MIGRANT CARE COSTS – AND SPENDS 388 DOLLARS PER DAY PER MIGRANT HOUSEHOLD.
THIS PROGRAM IS MEANT TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THOSE COSTS BY INCENTIVIZING MIGRANTS TO MOVE.
LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS TO A GROWING MIGRANT CRISIS NOW IN THE BIG APPLE –
THE CITY LAUNCHED A PROGRAM CALLED “ASLYEE MOVEOUT ASSISTANCE.”
THE GRANT WORTH UP TO 4 GRAND AIMS TO COVER MOVING EXPENSES, SECURITY DEPOSITS, FIRST AND LAST MONTH’S RENT, AND ESSENTIAL HOUSEHOLD ITEMS.
THE MONEY COMES FROM WHAT THE CITY SAYS IS “UNUSED FUNDS” FROM THEIR HOMELESS BUDGET.
AND IF A MIGRANT RETURNS TO A SHELTER – THEY WON’T BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE GRANT A SECOND TIME.
TO QUALIFY –
MIGRANTS WOULD NEED TO FIRST SECURE THEIR OWN HOUSING OUTSIDE OF THE SHELTER AND PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION LIKE A LEASE OR RENTAL AGREEMENT.
SO FAR 150 FAMILIES HAVE BENEFITED FROM THE GRANT PROGRAM.
MORE THAN 350 THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS IN NEW YORK CITY AS OF JUNE OF THIS YEAR.
130 THOUSAND ARE SLEEPING INSIDE CITY SHELTERS.
IN THE PAST TWO YEARS –
THE CITY HAS SEEN MORE THAN 200 THOUSAND MIGRANTS ARRIVE.
LAST YEAR NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ERIC ADAMS SAID THE CITY WOULD END UP SPENDING MORE ON MIGRANTS THAN IT DOES ITS FIRE, PARKS, AND SANITATION DEPARTMENTS COMBINED.
