NYC gives migrants $4,000 for moving costs to leave city shelters

New York City is offering $4,000 grants to migrant families residing in city shelters in an effort to move them into permanent housing. The city is struggling with space as 65,000 migrants are currently in shelters.

In the past two years, the city has spent more than $5 billion on migrant care costs and spends $388 per day per migrant household. The program, called “Aslyee Moveout Assistance,” aims to alleviate some of these costs by incentivizing migrants to move.

The grant, worth up to $4,000, is intended to cover moving expenses, security deposits, first and last month’s rent, and essential household items. The funds come from what the city describes as “unused funds” from its homeless budget. Migrants who return to a shelter will not be eligible for the grant a second time.

To qualify, migrants must first secure their own housing outside of the shelter and provide documentation such as a lease or rental agreement. So far, 150 families have benefited from the grant program.

As of June, more than 350,000 people were homeless in New York City, with 130,000 sleeping in city shelters. Over the past two years, the city has seen more than 200,000 migrants arrive.

Last year, Mayor Eric Adams predicted that the city would end up spending more on migrants than on its fire, parks, and sanitation departments combined.
