Jimmie Johnson: WE’RE NOW LEARNING MORE ABOUT THIS WEEK’S DEADLY MASS SHOOTING AT A TEXAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
AS FAMILIES MOURN THE 19 STUDENTS AND TWO TEACHERS KILLED, LAW ENFORCEMENT IS SHARING CRUCIAL DETAILS ABOUT WHAT LED UP TO THIS TRAGEDY – INCLUDING THE LACK OF A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER ON DUTY.
A TEXAS PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIAL SAYS THEY FIRST RECEIVED A 9-11 CALL AROUND 11:28 AM DESCRIBING THE SUSPECT WHO SHOT HIS GRANDMOTHER IN THE FACE AND TOOK OFF WITH HER PICK-UP TRUCK.
MINUTES LATER, THE SUSPECT CRASHED THE VEHICLE AND BAILED WITH A LONG RIFLE IN HAND ALONG WITH A BAG FILLED WITH AMMUNITION.
ROUGHLY TEN MINUTES LATER, HE ARRIVES AT THE SCHOOL AND OPENS FIRE.
OFFICIALS SAY HE JUMPED A SCHOOL FENCE AND MADE HIS WAY INSIDE AN UNLOCKED DOOR, WHICH LED HIM INTO AN OPEN CLASSROOM.
FOUR MINUTES LATER, OFFICERS ARRIVED ON THE SCENE BUT DID NOT IMMEDIATELY GO IN. INSTEAD, OPTING TO CALL FOR BACK-UP.
WITNESSES REPORTED FRUSTRATION THAT THE OFFICERS WERE NOT GOING IN.
ONE PARENT EVEN CONSIDERED CHARGING INTO THE BUILDING WITH THE HELP OF BYSTANDERS.
Javier Cazares | Father of Texas school shooting victim: “While the parents argued with the police ‘Ya’ll need to go in. Ya’ll need to do your job.’ Their response was ‘We’re here to, we can’t do our jobs because you guys are interfering.’ But yeah there are plenty of guys on the other side that can go in, can go inside and do their jobs.”
Jimmie Johnson: BEFORE THIS AFTERNOON — IT WAS NOT CLEAR WHETHER A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER WAS ON HAND — NOR WAS IT CLEAR HOW LONG IT TOOK OFFICERS TO KILL THE SUSPECT.
TODAY — WE LEARNED THAT IT WAS ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER INITIAL ENTRY.
