Protesters attempt to breach barricade at DNC

Protests erupted outside the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Monday, Aug. 19, as thousands of demonstrators voiced opposition to U.S. support for Israel in the ongoing Gaza war. The largely peaceful protests took a more confrontational turn when a small group of protesters breached a security fence near the convention site, drawing the attention of riot police.

Chanting “end the occupation now” and “the whole world is watching,” demonstrators evoked memories of the 1968 DNC protests.

While most of the demonstrators remained peaceful, police in riot gear arrested at least four people during the security breach. The larger crowd included families, students and activists, all calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Vice President Kamala Harris became a focal point of protest chants, with some labeling her as “Killer Kamala” in criticism of her role in the administration’s policies.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the incident, stating that while most protesters were peaceful, a small group engaged in “acts of vandalism” and threw objects at officers. The situation was de-escalated without major incidents, though tensions remain high.

Organizers had anticipated a larger turnout of around 20,000 people, but fewer than expected attended the event. The protests are expected to continue throughout the week, coinciding with key moments at the convention, including Harris’ acceptance of the Democratic nomination. With tensions surrounding U.S. foreign policy and the Israel-Hamas conflict running high, activists have pledged to keep pressure on Democratic leaders throughout the DNC.
