A MYSTERY FISH FEARED EXTINCT FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES HAS REEMERGED IN THE WATERS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA.
EXCITEMENT RIPPLED THROUGH THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY BACK IN 2020 WHEN REPORTS SURFACED FROM CAMBODIA.
FISHERMEN HAD CAUGHT A LARGE, MYSTERIOUS FISH – AND SOME WONDERED IF IT MIGHT BE THE ELUSIVE ‘MEKONG GHOST,’ A GIANT SALMON CARP THAT HADN’T BEEN SEEN SINCE 2005.
AND IF IT’S WHAT THEY THINK IT IS, THIS FISH COULD BE A SIGN OF HOPE FOR THE RIVER’S FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM.
PHOTOS OF THE FISH’S DISTINCTIVE FEATURES – INCLUDING AN ODDLY-SHAPED MOUTH AND A PROTRUDING KNOB ON ITS JAW – SEEMED TO CONFIRM IT WAS THE ‘GHOST.’
BUT THE FISH WAS SOLD BEFORE BIOLOGISTS COULD GET A CLOSER LOOK.
A RESEARCH BIOLOGIST FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, AND HEAD OF THE ‘WONDERS OF THE MEKONG’ PROJECT, SAID THE DISCOVERY JUST DIDN’T FEEL LIKE ‘DEFINITIVE PROOF.’
RECENTLY, TWO MORE OF THESE FISH WERE CAUGHT IN THE MEKONG RIVER, AND THIS TIME RESEARCHERS WERE ABLE TO BUY AND EXAMINE THEM.
THE FISH, WEIGHING BETWEEN 11 AND 13 POUNDS, WERE THE FIRST CONFIRMED SIGHTINGS SINCE 2005. THE BIOLOGISTS KNEW RIGHT AWAY WHAT THEY HAD FOUND.
SO, THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A RARE FISH – IT’S ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE MEKONG RIVER ITSELF.
THE ‘MEKONG GHOST’ IS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, BUT ITS REDISCOVERY OFFERS HOPE FOR BOTH THE SPECIES AND THE ENTIRE MEKONG ECOSYSTEM.
STRETCHING ACROSS SEVERAL SOUTHEAST ASIAN COUNTRIES, THE RIVER IS A LIFELINE TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, BUT IT’S UNDER THREAT FROM CLIMATE CHANGE, OVERFISHING, AND HUMAN ACTIVITY LIKE DAM-BUILDING. BIOLOGIST BELIEVE THE FISH IS AN INDICATOR OF THE RIVER’S HEALTH.
AND NOW, THERE’S TALK OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION TO STUDY AND PROTECT THE SPECIES.
RESEARCHERS ARE CALLING FOR A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN CAMBODIA, LAOS, AND THAILAND TO CONSERVE THIS FISH AND OTHERS LIKE IT.
NEARLY 20% OF THE MEKONG’S FISH SPECIES ARE THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION.
BUT FOR NOW, THE REDISCOVERY OF THE ‘MEKONG GHOST’ IS A MUCH-NEEDED WIN FOR CONSERVATIONISTS.
