A NORTH CAROLINA CANDIDATE IS ARGUING THOUSANDS OF BALLOTS SHOULD BE TOSSED OUT FOLLOWING THE STATE’S SUPREME COURT ELECTION.
[Karah Rucker]
DRAWING SOME OUTRAGE FROM VOTERS WHO SAY THEIR ELGIBILITY IS BEING QUESTIONED.
THE DEMOCRATIC INCUMBENT IS EXPECTED TO HOLD ON TO HER SEAT AFTER A PARTIAL RECOUNT…RESULTS SHOWED JUSTICE ALLISON RIGGS WON THE ELECTION BY MORE THAN 700 VOTES.
HER CHALLENGER, REPUBLICAN JEFFERSON GRIFFIN, CONTESTED HER VICTORY POINTING TO 60 THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO ILLEGALLY VOTED.
GRIFFIN ALLEGES VOTERS DIDN’T PUT A DRIVER’S LICENSE NUMBER OR THE LAST FOUR DIGITS OF THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER WHEN THEY REGISTERED TO CAST A BALLOT.
A REQUIREMENT HE SAYS HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS.
THESE ARGUMENTS GOING IN FRONT OF THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE BOARD OF ELECTIONS WEDNESDAY…GRIFFIN’S LAWYERS ASKING FOR BALLOT TALLIES TO BE CORRECTED, ANOTHER RECOUNT OR A NEW ELECTION.
THIS IS SIMILAR TO A LAWSUIT BROUGHT JUST DAYS BEFORE THE NOVEMBER ELECTION.
THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE AND NORTH CAROLINA’S REPUBLICAN PARTY WANTED TO REMOVE A QUARTER MILLION VOTERS FOR NOT PROPERLY REGISTERING…BUT A FEDERAL JUDGE REJECTED THE ARGUMENTS.
LAWYERS FOR RIGGS COUNTER THE CLAIMS…THEY SAID ANYONE TRYING TO VOTE WOULD HAVE TO SHOW A VALID I-D. IN A BRIEF, THE LAWYERS WROTE, “Whether playing a board game, competing in a sport, or running for office, the runner-up cannot snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by asking for a redo under a different set of rules.”
IN RESPONSE TO THE FILINGS…THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS USING THEIR OWN LAWSUIT TO BLOCK THE STATE BOARD OF ELECTIONS FROM THROWING OUT **ANY DISPUTED BALLOTS.
THIS RACE IS BEING CLOSELY WATCHED AS REPUBLICANS TRY TO HOLD ON TO THEIR MAJORITY IN THE STATE’S SUPREME COURT…BUT WITH RIGG’S SEAT DEMOCRATS COULD CHIP AWAY AT THE CONTROL.
A MACHINE RECOUNT AND PARTIAL HAND RECOUNT OF MILLIONS OF BALLOTS UPHOLD THE RESULTS…SHOWING RIGGS HOLDS THE LEAD.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HAS NOT OFFICIALLY CALLED NORTH CAROLINA’S SUPREME COURT RACE.
