IF YOU’RE A BLACK RESIDENT IN SAN FRANCISCO – CITY LEADERS WANT TO PAY YOU FIVE MILLION DOLLARS AS PART OF A PLAN OF PROPOSED REPARATIONS.
THE CITY’S BOARD OF SUPERVISORS UNANIMOUSLY ACCEPTED THE PROPOSAL EARLIER THIS WEEK. BUT THE STATE’S NAACP CHAPTER IS A SURPRISING CRITIC – COMING OUT AGAINST THE CITY’S PLAN.
IN A NEWLY RELEASED DOCUMENT, THE SAN FRANCISCO BRANCH HAS OUTLINED WHY A ONE-TIME PAYMENT OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS DOESN’T ADD UP.
THEY ARE CALLING ON THE CITY TO REJECT THE PAYMENTS AND INSTEAD REDIRECT THE MONEY INTO INVESTMENTS IN FIVE KEY AREAS: EDUCATION, JOBS, HOUSING, HEALTHCARE AND A CULTURAL CENTER FOR BLACKS.
THIS IS A SLOW MOVING PROCESS. THE INITIAL DRAFT PLAN APPROVED THIS WEEK IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. A FINAL REPORT INCLUDING BOARD FEEDBACK IS DUE IN JUNE. AND THE BOARD WILL MEET AGAIN ON THE ISSUE IN SEPTEMBER.
