[LAUREN TAYLOR]
IN AUSTRALIA – KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 13 ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA.
DATA SHOWING SOCIAL MEDIA CAN CAUSE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IN CHILDREN IS ALREADY WELL KNOWN. NOW NEW RESEARCH IS SHOWING THE TECHNOLOGY’S NEGATIVE IMPACT FOR MINORS’ IN OTHER AREAS.
A PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SUNSHINE COAST IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA FOUND THAT A YOUNG PERSON’S IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT CAN BE SEVERELY THWARTED BY SOCIAL MEDIA USE.
IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT USUALLY BEGINS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 11 AND 15 AND HELPS A PERSON DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY WANT TO BECOME.
THE PROFESSOR SAYS SOCIAL MEDIA CAN CAUSE ADOLESCENTS TO OBSESS OVER HOW THEY COMPARE TO INFLUENCERS ONLINE AND NOT CRITICALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE SEEING OR ANALYZE THE INFORMATION “TO FORGE THEIR OWN IDENTITY.”
NOW SHES ASKING – SHOULD SOCIAL MEDIA USE BE BANNED FOR PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 16 IN AUSTRALIA?
HERE IN AMERICA – CONGRESS IS WORKING TO PASS A SET OF BILLS AIMED AT EXPANDING PROTECTIONS AND PRIVACY FOR CHILDREN ONLINE.
ON TUESDAY — THE SENATE OVERWHELMING PASSED LEGISLATION TO DO JUST THIS.
VOTING 91 TO 3… THE CHAMBER PASSED THE KIDS ONLINE SAFETY ACT AND THE CHILDREN AND TEENS’ ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT.
THE WILL BILLS REQUIRE TECH COMPANIES TO PROVIDE MINORS WITH OPTIONS TO PROTECT THEIR INFORMATION, DISABLE ADDICTIVE PRODUCT FEATURES AND OPT OUT OF PERSONALIZED ALGORITHMS.
SENATORS MARSHA BLACKBURN OF TENEESSEE AND RICHARD BLUMENTHAL OF CONNECTICUT TEAMED UP AND CO-AUTHORED KOSA.
(SEN. RICHARD BLUMENTHAL / D-CT)
“WHAT WE’RE DOING IS GIVING THE PARENTS AND KIDS THE TOOLS TO DISCONNECT FROM HARMFUL CONTENT: BULLYING, EATING DISORDERS, STUFF THAT REALLY HURTS THEM.”
[LAUREN TAYLOR]
PARENTS – WHO HAVE LOST THEIR CHILDREN TO SUICIDE OVER SOCIAL MEDIA HARMS – ALONG WITH AND ADVOCATES HAVE FOUGHT TO GET THE LEGISLATION PASSED.
THEY’VE TOLD THEIR STORIES AND SAY SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES AND GAMING SITES ALLOW HARMFUL CONTENT ON THEIR PLATFORMS – SUBJECTING THEIR CHILDREN AND MINORS TO HARMS SUCH AS DRUG ADDICTION, BULLYING, AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION.
IF THE BILLS BECOME LAW – SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES WOULD BE REQUIRED TO MITIGATE THESE HARMS TO CHILDREN AND REQUIRE MORE SAFETY SETTINGS FOR MINORS.
SOME BIG TECH PLATFORMS – LIKE X, MICROSOFT, AND SNAP ALL SAID THEY SUPPORT THE BILLS.
HOWEVER – FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM HAVE NOT PUBLICLY TAKEN A STANCE.
HOWEVER – THE BILLS AREN’T LAW, JUST YET AND MINORS AND TEENS ARE NOT BANNED FROM USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE U-S.
THE LEGISLATION NOW HEAD TO THE HOUSE – WHICH IS ON RECESS UNTIL SEPTEMBER.
HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON HAS SAID HE WILL WORK TO FIND CONSENSUS.
PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS INDICATED – HE WILL SIGN THE BILLS INTO LAW IF THEY’RE PASSED BY CONGRESS.
