TEXAS HAS SPENT OVER 220 MILLION DOLLARS IN TAXPAYER FUNDS TO BUS NEARLY 120-THOUSAND MIGRANTS TO SIX SO-CALLED “SANCTUARY” CITIES SINCE APRIL 2022, AN INCREASE FROM 148-MILLION DOLLARS REPORTED EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE PROGRAM, INITIATED BY GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT, WAS PART OF A BROADER RESPONSE TO THE SHARP INCREASE IN MIGRANT CROSSINGS AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER AFTER PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN TOOK OFFICE. THE BUSING PROGRAM AIMED TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE CRISIS AND RELIEVE PRESSURE ON TEXAS BORDER TOWNS, SHIFTING THE MIGRANT BURDEN TO CITIES LIKE NEW YORK, WASHINGTON D.C., AND LOS ANGELES.TEXAS TAXPAYERS HAVE SHOULDERED NEARLY ALL OF THE 221 MILLION DOLLARS IN COSTS, WITH ONLY 460-THOUSAND-DOLLARS COMING FROM OUTSIDE DONATIONS. THIS BREAKS DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 18-HUNDRED DOLLARS PER MIGRANT. GOVERNOR ABBOTT HAS DEFENDED THE PROGRAM AS NECESSARY FOR PROTECTING TEXAS COMMUNITIES AND DRAWING NATIONAL ATTENTION TO IMMIGRATION ISSUES, BUT CRITICS HAVE CONDEMNED THE MOVE AS A POLITICAL STUNT USING MIGRANTS AS PAWNS. NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ERIC ADAMS ACCUSED ABBOTT OF FAILING TO NOTIFY NEW YORK OF INCOMING BUSES, STRAINING LOCAL RESOURCES AND PROMPTING LEGAL CHALLENGES.THE BUSING PROGRAM HAS SEEN A SIGNIFICANT SLOWDOWN IN RECENT MONTHS. TEXAS OFFICIALS REPORT THE LAST MIGRANT BUS LEFT EL PASO ON JUNE 27, BOUND FOR NEW YORK. THIS REDUCTION COINCIDES WITH A SHARP DROP IN MIGRANT CROSSINGS FOLLOWING A JUNE EXECUTIVE ORDER FROM PRESIDENT BIDEN, WHICH LIMITED ASYLUM OPPORTUNITIES. ACCORDING TO FEDERAL REPORTS, MIGRANT APPREHENSIONS IN TEXAS FELL BY 32% IN JUNE.GOVERNOR ABBOTT’S OFFICE, HOWEVER, CREDITED THE DECREASE TO TEXAS’S $11 BILLION OPERATION LONE STAR, WHICH DEPLOYED NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS AND STATE TROOPERS TO PATROL THE BORDER. ABBOTT HAS VOWED TO CONTINUE THE BUSING PROGRAM AND NOTED THAT FUTURE OPERATIONS WILL DEPEND ON MIGRATION PATTERNS IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE 2024 ELECTION.FOR MORE OF OUR UNBIASED — STRAIGHT FACTS REPORTING — DOWNLOAD THE STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP OR VISIT US AT SAN – DOT – COM.
