Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, D, is facing conservative backlash after a recent social media post. The governor participated in a social media trend while promoting the Democratic ticket.

The video was posted by podcaster Liz Plank and includes the song “Dilemma” by Nelly, showcasing a trend of hand-feeding food to someone. The Dorito chips held by Whitmer serve as a play on words. Stephen Colbert also participated in the viral trend over the summer.

Whitmer’s video on Plank’s account came with a caption promoting the CHIPS Act, passed by President Joe Biden in 2022, stating, “Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing. Donald Trump would put that at risk.”

Some Republicans have criticized the video, claiming it resembles the Catholic tradition of communion.

Tim Murtaugh, a former Trump advisor, responded on X. “Let’s be clear what’s happening in this video. Gov. Whitmer of Michigan is pretending to give communion to a leftist podcaster on her knees, using a Dorito as the Eucharist while wearing a Harris-Walz hat,” Murtaugh said. “Do they want zero Catholic votes for Harris?”

Two Republican state senators also criticized the video, calling it “weird.”

Whitmer’s office responded to the criticism, stating, “The governor’s social media is well known for infusing her communications with pop culture. The fact that people are paying attention to a video promoting President Biden’s CHIPS Act proves it’s working.”
