A law that could ban TikTok passed both chambers of Congress and received President Joe Biden’s signature on Wednesday, April 24. While a TikTok ban in the U.S. is a potential consequence of the law, an actual ban could be years away in the case that TikTok refuses to comply with the rules.
The law gives TikTok 9-12 months to cut ties with its parent company ByteDance, a Chinese company. The law aims to dissolve TikTok’s ties to America’s greatest adversary, largely over national security concerns.

It’s not just lawmakers in favor of the law either. A CNBC poll found nearly half of Americans also want to see TikTok cut off from China’s reach.
While Americans are worried about losing access to the app that many receive income from, TikTok has a lot to lose out of the deal too. The U.S. is TikTok’s top customer and other countries don’t even come close.
If ByteDance does refuse to sell its stake in TikTok, a TikTok ban is still likely years away, if at all.
TikTok has promised to challenge the law in court, claiming it would infringe on Americans’ rights to free speech. A lengthy legal battle could follow.
THE BILL THAT COULD SEE TIKTOK BANNED IS ALL THE BUZZ.
ITS NOW PASSED BOTH CHAMBERS OF CONGRESS AND BIDEN SIGNED IT INTO LAW.
BUT JUST BECAUSE THIS SO-CALLED “TIKTOK BAN BILL” IS NOW OFFICIALLY ON THE BOOKS –
DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE LOSING ACCESS TO THE APP.
WHILE THAT IS A POTENTIAL **CONSEQUENCE –
ANY “BAN” COULD BE **YEARS AWAY IF WE GOT TO THE POINT WHERE TIKTOK ISN’T COMPLYING UNDER THE BILL’S NEW RULES.
WE’LL KEEP THINGS SHORT AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND –
SINCE HALF OF AMERICANS ARE ON THE APP AND SOME ARE PROBABLY THINKING “WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE GOVERNMENT TAKING AWAY TIKTOK?”
WHAT THIS LAW DOES IS GIVE TIKTOK 9 TO 12 MONTHS TO CUT TIES WITH ITS PARENT COMPANY “BYTEDANCE.”
BYTEDANCE – IS A CHINESE COMPANY.
IT’S THESE TIES TO AMERICA’S GREATEST ADVERSARY – THAT THIS LAW AIMS TO DISSOLVE –
LARGELY OVER NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS.
AND ITS NOT JUST LAWMAKERS IN FAVOR OF IT EITHER.
A CNBC POLL FOUND NEARLY HALF OF AMERICANS **ALSO WANT TO SEE TIKTOK CUT OFF FROM CHINA’S REACH.
WHILE MANY AMERICANS ARE WORRIED ABOUT LOSING ACCESS TO THE APP THAT MANY MAKE MONEY OFF –
**TIKTOK HAS A LOT TO LOSE OUT OF THE DEAL TOO.
THE U.S. IS TIKTOK’S NUMBER ONE CUSTOMER – OTHER COUNTRIES DON’T EVEN COME CLOSE.
LET’S SAY BYTEDANCE DOES REFUSE TO SELL ITS STAKE IN TIKTOK –
A TIKTOK BAN IS STILL LIKELY **YEARS AWAY – IF AT ALL –
BECAUSE TIKTOK HAS PROMISED TO CHALLENGE THE LAW IN COURT–
CLAIMING IT WOULD INFRINGE ON AMERICANS’ RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH.
AND A LENGTHY LEGAL BATTLE COULD FOLLOW.
