IN THE MIDST OF ESCALATING TENSIONS AND CIVIL UNREST IN HAITI, THE UNITED STATES HAS ESCALATED ITS SECURITY MEASURES BY DEPLOYING AN ADDITIONAL TEAM OF MARINES TO ITS EMBASSY IN PORT-AU-PRINCE.
THIS MOVE IS IN RESPONSE TO THE RECENT UPHEAVAL THAT LED TO THE RESIGNATION OF ACTING HAITIAN PRIME MINISTER ARIEL HENRY, FOLLOWING A PERIOD OF INTENSE ANTI-GOVERNMENT PROTESTS AND VIOLENCE.
THE MARINE FLEET-ANTI-TERRORISM SECURITY TEAM, ALSO KNOWN AS THE FAST TEAM, HAS BEEN DEPLOYED WITH THE MISSION TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY AT THE EMBASSY.
THE U.S. SOUTHERN COMMAND HAS EMPHASIZED THAT THIS DEPLOYMENT IS A STRATEGIC ACTION TO MAINTAIN ROBUST SECURITY CAPABILITIES AT THE EMBASSY, ENSURING IT REMAINS OPERATIONAL TO ASSIST U.S. CITIZENS AND TO AID HAITIAN EFFORTS TOWARDS A PEACEFUL TRANSITION OF POWER.
EARLY THIS WEEK, U.S. MILITARY HELICOPTERS WERE USED TO EVACUATE NON-ESSENTIAL AMERICAN STAFF FROM THE EMBASSY IN HAITI. A STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL TOLD ABC NEWS THAT DESPITE EVACUATIONS, A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF DIPLOMATS REMAIN ON DUTY AT THE EMBASSY.
THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT IS STEPPING UP ITS EFFORTS WITH THE MULTINATIONAL SECURITY SUPPORT MISSION, WORKING CLOSELY WITH PARTNERS IN HAITI AND KENYA TO QUICKLY GET RESOURCES WHERE THEY’RE NEEDED. ACCORDING TO THE U-S-SOUTHERN COMMAND —THIS IS ALL ABOUT HELPING HAITI’S NATIONAL POLICE BRING BACK PEACE AND SECURITY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
