US judge to hear AP challenge to Trump’s ban over use of Gulf of Mexico name

A federal judge will review the Associated Press’s request to restore access for its journalists after the Trump administration blocked them from referring to the Gulf of Mexico. The Associated Press’s lawsuit claims the ban violates the First Amendment by attempting to control news reporting language.

Trump’s administration contends that the AP has no constitutional right to “special media access to the president.” The White House Correspondents’ Association stated that the ban “will chill and distort news coverage of the president to the public’s detriment.”
