US to hand over pest inspections of Mexican avocados to Mexico and California growers aren’t happy

California avocado growers are upset over a U.S. decision to transfer pest inspections of Mexican orchards to Mexico, leading to concerns about potential pest invasions. The California Avocado Commission expressed fear that this action undermines a long-established inspection process essential for their industry.
Mexico’s Agriculture Department stated this agreement acknowledges the commitment of Mexican growers, who have not faced sanitary issues in over 27 years. The decision came during the week of Sept. 15, with the Mexican Agriculture Department saying they were in agreement with U.S. counterparts.
