Host Joy Reid has been fired from MSNBC as part of a broader slate of programming changes under new network president Rebecca Kutler. Declining ratings after the 2024 election may have influenced MSNBC’s decision. The decision has polarized media observers across the political spectrum.

Some liberal viewers, journalists, and activists argue that the firing is an attempt to silence Black voices. Meanwhile, some conservatives — including President Trump — have praised the move, viewing the host as a relentless critic of the president and his supporters.

Watch the video above as Dr. Rashad Richey agrees that Reid’s firing is another Black voice silenced, and it reflects efforts by those in power to maintain a system “rooted in discrimination, bias, bigotry, and unfair play.”

The following is an excerpt from the above video:

Let’s go to the firing of Joy Reid. Can I remind everyone that all of this madness is happening during Black History Month?

Joy Reid, Black female lead anchor who has been a remarkable voice to the voiceless, who has been an advocate and ally to people of color, who has been a thorn in the side of Donald Trump as a man and Trump as the administration — all of a sudden, new leadership comes to MSNBC, fires Joy Reid. Why?

MSNBC has been failing for a while. All of the shows are down, and to be 100 with you, Joy Reid doesn’t have the lowest ratings. You got to look at a white guy for that at MSNBC.

Here’s what we know: The moral arc of the universe bends towards righteousness. Here’s the other side [of] this moment in history. We know who our friends are. We know who our allies are. We know what companies, what brands, what media agencies and people actually stood for, right?

Yeah, all right, you’ve seen it. You see it happening. The villain is literally firing the hero. I’m talking about the villainous empire of Trump and Maga and Elon Musk. You know, it’s interesting to me that at one time Maga supported members of the military. There was a time when Maga supported leaders who paid their dues, put in the work, qualified based on actual qualifications standards.

Now you may find this quite interesting,

but given the reality of what’s happening now, where the military is being politicized like never before. You literally have people in charge of the FBI, Department of Justice, military command, who did not and would not qualify under normative rules. Who’s the DEI hire now there is no question he accepts. He has his position because of the color of his skin. There is no question that these individuals are attempting to simply take away fairness that was implemented in the first place. You see, they don’t want an equal footing. They don’t want fair footing. They want the system to be holistically rooted in discrimination, bias, bigotry and unfair play. You see in that scenario, they win,

and let’s go to the firing of joy Reid, Can I remind everyone that all of this madness is happening during Black History Month? Joy Reid, black female lead anchor

who has been a remarkable voice to the voiceless, who has been an advocate and ally

to people of color, who has been a thorn in the side of Donald Trump as a man and Trump as the administration. All of a sudden, new leadership comes to MSNBC. Fires. Joe read, why MSNBC has been failing for a while. All of the shows are down and to be 100 with you. Joy Reid doesn’t have the lowest ratings. You got to look at a white guy for that at MSNBC.

Here’s what we know,

the moral

arc of the universe bends towards righteousness.

Here’s the other side

this moment in history. We know who our friends are. We know who the allies are. We know what companies, what brands, what media agencies and people

actually stood for, right? Listen, it wasn’t popular when Dr King stood for the civil rights of black people. you have this moral dilemma rooted in the foundational principles

of the original sin of this nation, owning another human being, being able to murder another human being with absolutely no

response reaction, remedy or justice from these United States of America that was foundational to this country. We’re still fighting against the DNA of that foundation, but we are able to nurture beyond the nature of America, and that’s what you see happening before you. So they will continue to attempt and unravel decades of blood, sweat, tears, sacrifice and fight in order to hold on to their hierarchy and their oligarchy. But I promise you this will not be the last stand for those who are actually free thinking in this nation
