Just days after actor and comedian Russell Brand was charged with rape and sexual assault in London, reports suggest he could also face criminal charges in the U.S.
Brand’s legal team informed a New York court preparing to hear sexual assault allegations against him in a civil case that he fears criminal charges in the U.S. In 2023, he was sued by an extra from the 2010 Warner Brothers rom-com “Arthur,” who filed anonymously as Jane Doe. She claims Brand exposed himself and later assaulted her in a bathroom on set. Warner Brothers, also named in the suit, has agreed to release up to eight hours of outtakes from the film. Both Brand and Warner Brothers have denied the allegations.
London Metropolitan Police announced charges against Brand, including one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. Brand responded on social media, stating, “I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile, but what I never was was a rapist.”
Brand’s attorneys have requested to delay the New York civil case, arguing it could overlap with the U.K. proceedings and stating that Brand does not want to “incriminate himself” in either case.
London police have confirmed that Brand will appear in court on May 2. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone affected to come forward.
