RESIDENTS OF A REMOTE ALASKAN COMMUNITY WANT TO BUILD A NEW ROAD THEY SAY WILL HELP SAVE LIVES.
BUT ENVIRONMENTALISTS WORRY LOCAL WILDLIFE AND ECOSYSTEMS WILL BE HARMED IN THE PROCESS.
THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION THIS WEEK INDICATED ITS SUPPORT FOR THE PROPOSED 24 MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT-
CONNECTING THE SMALL CITY OF KING COVE, ALASKA WITH THE COLD BAY AIRPORT.
PROVIDING YEAR-ROUND ACCESS TO MEDICAL EVACUATIONS IN THE EVENT OF EMERGENCIES.
HOWEVER, TO DO SO, THE ROAD WILL HAVE TO PASS THROUGH A NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.
THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION PREVIOUSLY REJECTED THIS IDEA, BEFORE TRUMP TOOK OFFICE AND DECIDED TO APPROVE IT.
THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION WITHDREW THAT GREENLIGHT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO-
BUT HAS NOW REVERSED COURSE, CLAIMING TO HAVE FIXED ERRORS WITH IT MADE UNDER TRUMP.
THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE NOW SAYS THE CURRENT PLAN WILL ACTUALLY ENHANCE CONSERVATION EFFORTS-
WITH DEVELOPERS GIVING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT 30,000 ACRES OF LAND TO ADD TO THE WILDERNESS REFUGE IN EXCHANGE FOR THE ABILITY TO BUILD THIS ROAD.
OPPONENTS ARGUE THE PROJECT WILL IMPACT THE MANY ANIMAL SPECIES THAT CALL THIS NATURE RESERVE HOME-
WHILE ADDING THAT BUILDING THE ROAD OUT IS ACTUALLY UNNECESSARY.
THEY CONTEND THE REGION’S VIOLENT WINTER STORMS WILL MAKE TRAVEL ALONG THE PROPOSED ROUTE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS-
AS WELL AS IMPASSABLE DURING MUCH OF THE YEAR.
DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE – AN ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY GROUP – ALSO QUESTIONS WHY THE ROAD IS NEEDED AT ALL-
POINTING TO THE 50 MILLION DOLLARS IN FEDERAL FUNDING ALREADY PROVIDED TO KING COVE FOR MEDICAL RESPONSE EFFORTS.
WHICH INCLUDED THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NINE MILLION DOLLAR HOVERCRAFT SYSTEM THAT CAN REACH COLD BAY AIRPORT FASTER THAN THE PROPOSED ROAD WOULD ALLOW FOR IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY.
MEANWHILE, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ARE NOW SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON THE PROPOSED PROJECT-
AS EXPERTS BELIEVE THE TRUMP WHITE HOUSE IS LIKELY TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE ROAD REGARDLESS.
FOR STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS, I’M JACK AYLMER.
