DOJ to monitor voting in Ohio county over intimidation concerns

Share

The Department of Justice announced it will monitor voting in a northeast Ohio county. This decision came after controversial social media posts from the local sheriff about migrants.

In September, Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski, a Republican, posted a screenshot of a Fox News segment that criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris over their immigration record and the impact on small communities, including Springfield, where Haitian migrants have caused a political divide.

On Zuchowski’s personal Facebook account, he called Harris a “laughing hyena.” He also urged residents to “write down all the addresses” of people with signs for Harris in their yards so they would know who supported the arrival of migrants.

Portage County voters voiced concerns over intimidation over the possibility of monitoring and collecting voters’ personal information.

The county already barred the sheriff’s office from providing security during early voting.

The DOJ said it’s providing federal intervention for the rest of early voting and on Election Day to ensure the county complies with voting rights.

The DOJ did not specifically mention Zuchowski in its announcement.

Zuchowski took the posts down after criticism.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said the state will ensure the honesty, accuracy and accessibility of the voting process.

THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE IS SET TO MONITOR VOTING IN A NORTHEAST OHIO COUNTY.

THIS COMES AFTER CONTROVERSIAL SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS FROM THE LOCAL SHERIFF ABOUT MIGRANTS.

LAST MONTH, PORTAGE COUNTY SHERIFF BRUCE ZUCHOWSKI (zoo-cow-skee) – WHO’S A REPUBLICAN –  POSTED A SCREENSHOT OF A FOX NEWS SEGMENT CRITICIZING PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS OVER THEIR IMMIGRATION RECORD AND THE IMPACT ON SMALL COMMUNITIES.

THAT INCLUDES SPRINGFIELD, WHERE CONTROVERSY OVER HAITIAN MIGRANTS HAS CAUSED A POLITICAL DIVIDE.

OH HIS PERSONAL FACEBOOK ACCOUNT, ZUCHOWSKI CALLED HARRIS A “LAUGHING HYENA.”

HE ALSO URGED RESIDENTS TO “WRITE DOWN ALL THE ADDRESSES” OF PEOPLE WITH SIGNS FOR HARRIS IN THEIR YARDS SO THEY WOULD KNOW WHO SUPPORTED THE ARRIVAL OF MIGRANTS.

PORTAGE COUNTY VOTERS SAID HIS POSTS CAUSED THEM TO WORRY ABOUT VOTER INTIMIDATION OVER THE POSSIBILITY OF MONITORING AND COLLECTING VOTERS’ PERSONAL INFORMATION.

THE COUNTY HAS ALREADY BARRED THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE FROM PROVIDING SECURITY DURING EARLY VOTING.

THE D-O-J SAYS IT’S PROVIDING FEDERAL INTERVENTION FOR THE REST OF EARLY VOTING AND ON ELECTION DAY TO ENSURE THE COUNTY COMPLIES WITH VOTING RIGHTS.

THE D-O-J DID NOT SPECIFICALLY MENTION ZUCHOWSKI IN ITS ANNOUNCEMENT.

ZUCHOWSKI TOOK THE POSTS DOWN AFTER CRITICISM.

OHIO SECRETARY OF STATE FRANK LAROSE SAID THE STATE WILL ENSURE THE HONESTY, ACCURACY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF THE VOTING PROCESS.
