A GROUP OF FORMER OIL EXECUTIVES FROM SHELL ARE TRYING TO SOLVE ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES WITH GREEN ENERGY.
THE POWER PROVIDED FROM RENEWABLES IS CLEANER, BUT ALSO NOT CONSTANT.
THE SUN ISN’T ALWAYS SHINING AND THE WIND ISN’T ALWAYS BLOWING.
GENERATING MORE POWER WHEN CONDITIONS ARE IDEAL IS AN OPTION-
ALTHOUGH STORING THAT EXTRA ENERGY CAN OFTEN BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MAKING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
A STARTUP LED BY PEOPLE WITH A BACKGROUND IN BIG OIL – SAGE GEOSYSTEMS – IS WORKING WITH THE STATE OF TEXAS TO EXPLORE A NEW WAY TO STORE THAT SURPLUS POWER.
THE SOLUTION – KEEP IT UNDERGROUND, MAKING A BATTERY IN THE EARTH.
THIS PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD THE WORLD’S FIRST GEOTHERMAL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM THAT DELIVERS POWER TO THE GRID.
SAGE IS LEASING SPACE FROM A COAL POWER PLANT WHERE THEY WILL DRILL A WELL INTO THE EARTH, CREATING A MAKESHIFT RESERVOIR OF WATER.
EXCESS SOLAR, WIND OR OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY CAN BE USED TO PUMP WATER INTO THAT RESERVOIR, CAUSING IT TO EXPAND AND STORE THE WATER UNDER PRESSURE.
WHEN ELECTRICITY IS NEEDED BACK ON THE GRID, OPENING THE FACILITY’S VALVES WILL SEND WATER BACK TO THE SURFACE, WHERE IT WILL TURN A TURBINE TO GENERATE POWER.
THIS PILOT PROJECT IS ONLY BEING DESIGNED TO HOLD 3 MEGAWATTS OF ENERGY-
BUT IF IT PROVES SUCCESSFUL, LARGER FACILITIES COULD BE DEVELOPED IN THE FUTURE.
CONSTRUCTION IS ALREADY UNDERWAY, AND SAGE EXPECTS IT TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF THIS YEAR.
