BUILDING WIND FARMS CAN HELP WIN A WAR.
AT LEAST, UKRAINE’S LARGEST PRIVATE ENERGY FIRM THINKS SO.
SAYING THE ENERGY SOURCE COULD BE A GAME CHANGER IN THEIR ONGOING CONFLICT WITH RUSSIA.
BUT FINDING INVESTORS WILLING TO FUND THE CONSTRUCTION IN A WAR-TORN NATION HAS BEEN CHALLENGING.
SINCE THE WAR STARTED, 90 PERCENT OF UKRAINE’S WIND ENERGY FARMS HAVE BEEN EITHER DISABLED OR OCCUPIED BY RUSSIAN FORCES.
THE COUNTRY’S ENERGY SECTOR HAS CONTINUED TO TAKE HITS.
TOTALING, ABOUT TWELVE BILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES.
IT’S A MAJOR REASON WHY UKRAINIAN OFFICIALS ARE NOW ASKING THE E.U. TO HELP FUND THE CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR OF CLEAN ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE.
THE EUROPEAN GOVERNING BODY HAS ALREADY CONTRIBUTED NEARLY A BILLION DOLLARS TO THIS EFFORT SINCE 20-22.
UKRAINIAN OFFICIALS SAY IT’LL TAKE ABOUT 300 MILLION DOLLARS AND UPWARDS OF EIGHT MONTHS OF WORK TO COMPLETE THE NECESSARY WORK.
UKRAINE SAYS RUSSIA’S INVASION HAS CAUSED THEM TO CONCENTRATE LARGE AMOUNTS OF ENERGY PRODUCTION IN JUST A FEW PLACES.
PRESENTING AN EASY TARGET FOR RUSSIAN STRIKES.
IF UKRAINE’S POWER SUPPLY WAS INSTEAD SPREAD ACROSS HUNDREDS OF WIND TURBINES, LEADERS IN THE NATION’S ENERGY SECTOR BELIEVE IT WOULD BE MUCH LESS VULNERABLE.
IT’S AN IDEA THEY’VE BEEN PUSHING FORWARD SINCE THE ONSET OF THE WAR.
DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF FIGHTING, UKRAINE BUILT MORE WIND FARMS IN THE COUNTRY THAN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
NOW THEY’RE BUILDING THE NATION’S FIRST WIND POWER PLANT IN A CONFLICT ZONE, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO SUPPLY ENERGY FOR ABOUT 200,000 HOMES.
AND ADDITIONAL WIND FARMS ARE ALSO ALREADY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
BUT LOOKING BEYOND THE WAR, UKRAINE STILL WANTS TO CONTINUE MAKING INVESTMENTS IN THIS TYPE OF GREEN ENERGY TECHNOLOGY.
BY 20-35 THE UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT WANTS TO SEE HALF THE NATION POWERED BY RENEWABLES.
