How Republicans and Democrats see key issues differently in presidential race


With Election Day exactly two weeks away, Republicans and Democrats are weighing in on the issues that matter to them. A recent Gallup poll had voters rank the most important issues.

The survey asked 1,023 U.S. adults by phone to list 22 key issues from extremely important to not important. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 4%.

Voters were told to put 22 topics in various categories from extremely important, all the way down to not important.

The economy was No. 1 for Republicans, with 66% viewing it as extremely important. Immigration was No. 2, at 63%, followed by terrorism/national security, at 60%. Crime came in at No. 4, with 52% of respondents viewing it as extremely important. Taxes rounded out the top five, at 46%.

Contrast those numbers and results with Democrats who took the survey. Democracy in the United States came in as the most important issue at 58%. No. 2 was the types of Supreme Court justices that the candidate would pick, 57%. Abortion came in at No. 3 with 49% of Democrats viewing it as extremely important. Rounding out the top five were health care and education.

The poll also showed 95% of Republicans said they agreed with former President Donald Trump on the issues that mattered most to them. Meanwhile, 92% of Democrats said they agreed with Vice President Kamala Harris on the key issues.

HERE ARE THE TOP FIVE FOR REPUBLICANS. NUMBER ONE : THE ECONOMY. 66% VIEW THAT AS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. NUMBER TWO : IMMIGRATION AT 63%. NUMBER THREE : TERRORISM AND NATIONAL SECURITY WITH 60 %. CRIME COMES IN AT NUMBER FOUR WITH 52 % OF REPUBLICANS VIEWING IT AS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. ROUNDING THE TOP FIVE, TAXES AT 46 %.
CONTRAST THAT WITH DEMOCRATS, WHO HAVE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TOP FIVE.
NUMBER ONE : DEMOCRACY IN THE UNITED STATES : 58 %. NUMBER TWO: TYPES OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICES A CANDIDATE WOULD PICK WITH 57%. ABORTION CAME IN AT NUMBER 3 WITH 49 % OF DEMOCRATS VIEWING IT AS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP FIVE : HEALTH CARE WITH 45 % AND EDUCATION AT 40%.
THE TWO ISSUES WHERE REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS ARE EXTREMELY CLOSE, WHEN IT COMES TO PRIORITIES, ARE RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA AND GUN LAWS.
PERHAPS REFLECTING THE PARTISAN DIVIDE AMONG VOTERS, 95% OF REPUBLICANS IN THE GALLUP SURVEY SAID THEY AGREE WITH DONALD TRUMP ON THE ISSUES THAT MATTER MOST TO THEM, WHILE 92% OF DEMOCRATS AGREE WITH KAMALA HARRIS ON THE KEY ISSUES.
