Hunter Biden sues IRS for violation of privacy

Days after being indicted on federal gun charges, President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is suing the Internal Revenue Service for violating his privacy. The lawsuit, filed Monday, Sept. 18, alleges that two IRS agents wrongfully shared Biden’s tax information in more than 20 televised interviews and numerous statements.

The lawsuit alleges that the two agents, identified as Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, violated Internal Revenue Code by “engaging in a campaign to publicly smear Mr. Biden.”

In the lawsuit, Biden’s attorneys said these agents should not be protected under federal whistleblower status because the public statements fall well outside the bounds of whistleblower protections.

Biden is asking for a court to award him $1,000 in damages for every unauthorized disclosure of his tax return information.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, Biden was indicted on three counts of federal firearm offenses stemming from allegations that he lied about his drug use to buy and handle a gun in October of 2018. That could lead to a trial during the 2024 presidential election race.
