FOR THE FIRST TIME, OPEN AI IS OPENING THE DOORS TO ITS TRAINING DATA, ALLOWING AUTHORS WHO ARE SUING THE COMPANY TO INSPECT THE MATERIALS USED TO DEVELOP ITS AI SYSTEM.
THE LAWSUIT, FILED BY PROMINENT AUTHORS INCLUDING SARAH SILVERMAN, PAUL TREMBLAY AND TA-NEHISI COATES, CLAIMS THAT OPEN AI USED THEIR COPYRIGHTED WORKS WITHOUT PERMISSION OR COMPENSATION.
THE SUIT ALLEGES THAT OPEN AI HARVESTED LARGE QUANTITIES OF BOOKS FROM THE WEB TO TRAIN ITS CHATBOT, CHAT GPT, WHICH THEY SAY GENERATED SUMMARIES AND ANALYSES OF THEIR WORKS WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. THE COMPANY STATES THAT IT TRAINS ITS MODELS ON LARGE, PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATASETS, WHICH MAY INCLUDE COPYRIGHTED WORKS.
IN RESPONSE, OPEN AI IS NOW GRANTING ACCESS TO ITS TRAINING DATA UNDER STRICT CONDITIONS. THE REVIEW WILL TAKE PLACE IN A SECURE ROOM AT THEIR SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE, WITH NO INTERNET OR RECORDING DEVICES ALLOWED. THOSE INSPECTING THE DATA WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS AND FOLLOW STRICT PROTOCOLS.
THE OUTCOME OF THIS LAWSUIT COULD HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF AI AND COPYRIGHT LAW, POTENTIALLY SETTING NEW LEGAL STANDARDS FOR HOW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS TRAINED.
