Missouri governor commutes sentence of white police officer convicted of fatally shooting Black man

Missouri Gov. Mark Parson, R, has commuted the sentence of Eric DeValkenaere, a white Kansas City police officer convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Cameron Lamb, a Black man. DeValkenaere was serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2021.
At trial, DeValkenaere claimed he fired after Lamb pointed a gun at another detective, with prosecutors arguing that the police lacked a warrant to be on the property where the shooting occurred. DeValkenaere did not receive a full pardon, but his sentence was shorted to parole, still subject to normal restrictions.
