A toasty winter? Great for Europe, terrible for Ukraine

Mother Nature is switching gears and Europeans are breathing a collective sigh of relief, for now at least. Ever since Russia cut off its energy exports to Europe in the face of the Ukrainian war, analysts have been predicting disruptive gas shortages and soaring energy costs. But with record-setting high temperatures across the region, energy demand has plummeted, taking prices down with it. That’s great news — unless your home is Kyiv instead of Paris. As Straight Arrow News contributor Peter Zeihan explains, warmer weather will impact how the war will be fought in Ukraine this winter, and not in a good way.

Excerpted from Peter’s Jan. 11 “Zeihan on Geopolitics” newsletter:

As much as we analysts like to make predictions and forecasts, Mother Nature is always right there to throw all of it into a tailspin. The crazy temps across Europe are no exception to this.

While this abnormally warm winter season has been a godsend for energy prices across Western Europe, its also thrown a wrench into Ukraine’s plans for a winter offensive.

I’m not saying Europeans should get used to shorts and mai-tais all winter long, but this season could hold lasting impacts (good or bad) for the year ahead.
