Timing of the Left’s attacks on Justice Thomas cannot be ignored

The controversy surrounding Justice Clarence Thomas failing to disclose paid vacations, gifts and real estate transactions involving GOP megadonor Harlan Crow shows no signs of abating. And now a report claims the real estate developer paid thousands of dollars in boarding school tuition for Thomas’ great-nephew.

Democrat lawmakers are calling for Thomas to be investigated and demanding hearings on ethics violations. Republicans like Texas Sen. Ted Cruz accuse Democrats of executing a “political smear job.”

Straight Arrow News contributor Star Parker agrees with Cruz that the Left is out to get the conservative justice. She argues the attacks on Thomas are an attempt to weaken the Supreme Court as it hands down right-leaning rulings like the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

In the past few years, there are few institutions that have enraged the Left more than the United States Supreme Court — this institution which President Taft once called “the guardians of the Constitution.” This hallowed group of nine men and women have handed down momentous decisions in the past year, involving guns, abortion, the environment, religion, and many other issues that the Left disagrees with — their rulings. So the timing of recent attacks against Justice Clarence Thomas was real interesting.

When the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is controlled by Democrats, held a hearing this week on Supreme Court ethics reforms, oh, their agenda became just downright obvious. The Left is doing its best to weaken the Supreme Court. The Chairman of the Committee, Democrat Dick Durbin, initially sent a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts. In the letter, the Chairman had urged Roberts to take swift action and had invited Roberts to testify before the committee regarding Supreme Court ethics reform. Justice Roberts not only declined the offer, he responded in a letter that stated, “Testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee by the Chief Justice of the United States is exceedingly rare, as one might expect in light of separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence.”

That letter was signed by all nine justices, every justice from those who had been appointed by Republicans, [to] those who have been nominated by Democrats. They agree with Roberts‘ statement and disagreed with this latest tactic by the Left. But this isn’t going to stop the Left.
